Why silver tarnishes
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and about 7.5% copper. It is the copper that reacts — with moisture and tiny amounts of sulphur in the air — and forms the darker layer you see. That is all tarnish is: a surface reaction, not damage to the metal underneath. It happens faster near perfume, lotions, salt air and humidity, and much faster when a piece is left sitting unworn in a drawer.
The easiest fix: wear it
The best anti-tarnish routine is simply wearing your silver. The natural oils in your skin keep it polished as you go about the day, which is why the pieces you wear constantly stay bright and the ones you save for special occasions go dull. Everyday silver mostly looks after itself.
How to clean it safely
- A soft cloth. For light tarnish, buff it with a soft, lint-free cloth (microfibre is perfect). This alone handles most of it.
- Mild soap and warm water. A little washing-up liquid in warm water, a soft rub, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Good for everyday grime and dulling.
- The foil and baking soda method for heavier tarnish: line a bowl with aluminium foil, add a spoon of baking soda, pour over hot water, and rest the piece on the foil for a minute or two. The tarnish lifts off. Rinse and dry well afterwards.
What to avoid
- Anything abrasive. Skip gritty or scratchy cleaners on silver — they can leave fine scratches on the surface. Soft cloth and warm water do the job without the risk.
- Chlorine and salt water. Take silver off before swimming; both are hard on it.
- Perfume and lotion. Put those on first, let them dry, then put your jewellery on last.
How to store it
Silver stays brightest kept cool, dark and dry — ideally in a soft pouch or a closed box, not left out in humid air. A piece you only wear occasionally will keep far better stored sealed. Lay chains flat rather than dropping them in a bowl, and they will not tangle either.
Looked after this simply, a good silver piece stays beautiful for decades — and can always be brought back to bright. That is the whole point of buying solid silver in the first place.
